Rihanna makes hits. No, with 11 No. 1 singles under her belt, that’s understating what she’s been able to accomplish in just seven years in the music business. Every fall, she comes in with a triumphant single setting the stage for yet another successful album that rakes in awards and comes accompanied by a tour that grosses millions.
And like clockwork, here we are with “Diamonds,” her new single produced by Stargate and Benny Blanco, as the setup for her upcoming R7 album. The feel-good record’s anchored by a catchy hook and pulsating beat, both of which will make it quick add to radio playlists.
But “Diamonds” falls in the category songwriter Linda Perry once created for Ri’s gal pal Katy Perry because it feels like “microwave popcorn” we’ve been served before either from the Caribbean princess or others already out. Instead of leading the pack, the tune finds Rihanna comfortably in the crowd and that’s just not a place where we’re familiar seeing her.
When we get a new Rihanna record, we want need to feel empowered, word to Cam’ron, or as if we need to be dancing. “Diamonds” doesn’t necessarily fall short, but it doesn’t hit the target either. It’s likeable but not memorable at this point. Then again, she could make a sexy video and make all of these words forgotten.
