“…You have adult content.”
In the most recent Hood State Of The Union episode, Charlamagne and Lil Duval debate the age old argument of how old is too old to still be rapping about kid stuff.
"“You Can Still Rap Past 40 If…”"
you actually have some grown up shit to say. If you still rappin about the same things you did as a young adult, you need to update your resume
idk why rap is the only genre of music where age matters. you look at rock kiss been putting out albums for damn near 40 years and nobody give a damn.
subject matter don’t matter as long as the shit jam.
I love E-40. He gets a pass because he’s practically a founding father of Bay Area rap & he’s steeped in the culture & lifestyle out there. He’s always been genuine.
+40 Teef (Real Turf Talk)
yup E-40 got longevityyy
If a rapper that’s long in the tooth is kowtowing to the interests of the misled youthful majority, i.e. Busta Rhymes, then he should probably stay out of the studio.
As I have grown up with the culture/genre, one thing that never bothered me (until recently) was just how many older rappers dress like kids. Initially, when some of them made drastic changes to their style/wardrobe, I questioned their motives. But now, I get it. It was a genuinely natural progression.
There simply is a time when you look ridiculous wearing the same clothes (and especially the cut/fit of those clothes) as those half your age.
The music itself is a different story. Some do it well… others have the clothes syndrome spill on over into their music.
But I suppose that is also a lifestyle. You can hit spots across America where 50+-year-old men are rockin’ fashion/labels/brands of 20 year olds.
Older rappers lose when they betray the so-called maturity they were supposed to have gained over the years.
The only person who gets a pass for not changing his dress is Raekwon. Dude has figured out what Wu fans want and that’s for Wu to still be the ’94 version of Wu lol. He gives them that and is eating off it.
You know what? I was actually going to mention Raekwon lol – he actually came to mind right away.
Ditto on the Raekwon. Even though his subject matter hasn’t changed much he is still somewhat successful. Probably because he was always rhyming on some grown man gangster boss type shit. He never rhymed like a young cat
youre talking about e40
how old is Charlamagne???????????? All that nigga do is talk and run his mouth but I saw him pull a Usain Bolt on the streets of NY not too long ago. But I digress. Duval like 40 too…is he too old for comedy???
As long as you can still rap and got some fie beats you can rap as long as you want. Perfect examples: Too Short, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Common
Rhyming and comedy ain’t the same shit. There’s a point where you’re too old to be talking about bitches and champagne in the club (unless you’re talking about the club you own). But you’re never too old to tell a joke.
They’re jokes aren’t “mature” so what is the difference???
Father time catches up to everyone along with circumstance. Everybody falls off. Martin, Chris Tucker, Eddie Murphy, Mike Epps, Katt Williams….dudes aint funny any more. But Steve Harvey is still funny and he’s like 60 or whatever.
Basically if you are past 40 but you still make some jamming music then you can still do it. But if you dropping music and it sounds like KRS-One last album then guess what
you are full of shit…steve harvey fam, really?!
id put any of those cats besides epps against harvey in a modern audience (meaning not gosple or old ass ppl) maybe not martin but….
Rae has always stayed true to his ethos though.
shout out to my guy teef for the correct use of “ethos”.
Niggas old as shit releasing shit called Hood State Of The Union.
How about them niggas go vote or join a charity or something. This nigga Charlamagne like 40 got his hat tilted
2 of the corniest dudes that misrepresent our culture in public erryday… No thank you
WILL. NOT. WATCH.
Yeah. Again, Hip-Hop is just now hitting that stage where the question can even come into play. You have to remember how young the genre is. Those RN mentioned – $hort, Jay, Common, etc. – they are still able to push units because their fan base grew with them in age as well (or perhaps I can only speak for myself).
It is wild to see sometimes (in a good way). I hit shows where the artist may not be selling a ton of records any longer. They may not be hitting high on Billboard. They may even be a joke in that regard to kids as they may not be all over radio. But man, if they do not sell-out shows like it ain’t nothing. Their fans are not allowing age to dictate their $upport. They will still purchase the music and go to shows.
You may not have the SoundScan numbers, but that alone proves to me that you can still do it at 40+.
The genre has just been too young before now to prove otherwise. Mac Dre could have been 60 and I would still be buying his albums.
DJ Quik comes to mind.
His shows always sell out + his set at Paid Dues ’12 was packed as hell. As in, at least +2,000 people in the building
Yeah man… good call. Quik came to mind right after I hit ‘Post Comment’
Still bothers me though, as talented of a musician and producer he is, that every rapper in Hip-Hop does not hit him up for tracks. I thought it would happen after The Black Album (via Jay’s recognition)… but it simply never has. He is one of my favorite rappers, musicians, and producers – in any genre.
Cyprus Hill. Bone Thugs. Snoop. All have a cult-like following. Might not sell 35 mill records, but they shows will be sold out.
Are ya’ll aware that Eminem is turning 40 next month, same age as what Biggie would be today? Man I’m only 24 and I feel like I’m getting old, all of my favorite artists are middle aged now! :(
I still fux wit Big Daddy Kane. over 40 and still has a live stage show
id loooooove to see that.
kane was so dope to me as a kid…i thought he was the best in the game even over rakim
do he still be rockin with scoob and scrap and dancin and shit?
the dif is Rock bands play instruments and the more life you’ve spent playin the better you are at it, so a 50 year old guitarist can outplay a 20 yr old based on experience so the 50 yr old can still jam. But a rapper looks silly at 50 performing a song he/she made at 20 rappin about a 20 yr old lifestyle.
when you talk about age/rappers you have to mention juicy j. he’s been doing the same thing for 20+ years and he hasn’t lost his authenticity (in my opinion) i guess all you have to do is stay true to yourself.
Maturity in Hip Hop is the biggest double edge sword !! Plenty of Elderstatesmen (mid 80’s & beyond) that are still rapping have matured with their content. Funny thing is, even some of their fans have said they fell off becaaus they’re not spitting the same. Niggas always looking for something new. It’s easy to say you want it but only now you’re checking for it. You wasn’t checking for it in the 90’s when emcees was smoothing their style out from being grimey & brash.
there’s no age limit in rap, as long as you keepin it real and not fakin the funk, the music will always be relevant to somebody
I hate when I’m late to the good ones…
Cosign everything Teef and TRA said, with an analogy alluding to Maze and Frankie, Gap Band, etc. Those bands had their hey day, but no longer put out new music or have a chart presence… But damned if they do a show and sixty million old brothers don’t come out with their best white linen suits and gators on like it’s 1978 all over again.
Charlamagne is annoying as HELL. I saw the joint with The Breakfest Club and Krit. Man, I felt like they were clownin on Krit for a second. smh
