Menahan Street Band – “Lights Out”

By / 10.16.12

Around the same time a friend of mine was putting me onto soul revivalists like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings a few years ago, I had the good fortune of coming across the Brooklyn collective Menahan Street Band, a jazz-soul crew composed of members from The Dap Kings and other new school groups like El Michels Affair, Antibalas, and The Budos Band. Since then, their smoothed out and widely-sampled instrumental album from 2008, Made the Road by Walking, has been a constant driving soundtrack of mine, perfect for those rides with grown folks for whom expletive-laden rap music just doesn’t do the trick.

In what should be welcome news for rappers with enough coin to legally sample these guys, Menahan Street Band have a new album, The Crossing, due out on October 30th. “Lights Out,” the first offering from the LP, carries the group’s retro, cinematic charm, with sweeping strings and characteristically ear-catching horns motoring the track.
