Rawkus Records’ Soundbombing just turned 15 which means half of the people reading these words have aged quite a bit. What it reminds me of is how many stories go untold from indie labels who got their hands dirty and nearly broke their backs trying to put undiluted music out.
Which is why it’s cool to see an inspiring mind out there – in this case, Jeff Broadway of Gatling Pictures – had the wisdom to do a documentary on Stones Throw Records while the label’s still 100 miles and runnin’. Under the direction of DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has consistently released critically acclaimed, not-so-pop albums from accomplished artists since its founding in 1996. That’s 15 years of “play what we want to” funk for the masses. And with the new documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records), the label’s history will not only be brought to life, but preserved in digital and visual forms. The label’s origins, artists, history, culture and global following will all be there for future generations to enjoy.
But like all good art, it comes with a price and patrons are essential. The film itself isn’t complete and there’s a Kickstarter campaign currently underway to help complete production. Watch the flick’s trailer below before making the trip to read the details for yourself. Check the documentary’s official site, ourvinylweighsaton.com, as well.
