The Weeknd – “Enemy”

The Weeknd has three new songs prepared for the November 13th release of Trilogy — a three-disc collection comprising his trio of acclaimed mixtapes from last year — but after hinting at some new music earlier in the week, he went ahead and offered up a separate track, “Enemy,” late last night via Twitter.

Featuring a sample from The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want,” the song plays like a recording from the Echoes of Silence sessions, with its openly self wallowing lyrics, anti-Drake sentiment towards gettin’ down (“the least I deserve is no conversation / I been working all week / I’d rather be your enemy / than any friend you think I would be”), and heavy, brooding production. It seems too polished to be just a throwaway, but if it is, it’s a mighty good one.
