Past and present intersect when Kendrick Lamar talks about his admiration for Tupac on Rhapsody’s “On The Record” series. K. Dot riding for ‘Pac is pretty far from breaking news, but hearing the former discuss the latter’s “Dear Mama” – specifically, Tupac’s unflinching portrayal of his addiction-raddled mother – sheds a lot of light on Kendrick’s incredible ability to speak on both sides of a coin.
He’s referenced everybody from Young Jeezy to Jay-Z in interviews and songs, but at the end of the day, it would appear that Tupac’s grizzled, close-to-home lyrics have stuck with Lamar more than any other lyricist. And for that, we are thankful.
