Closing out a year wouldn’t be complete without Skillz’s always anticipated and enjoyable “Rap Up.” Less than a week until the start of 2013, the Virginia rapper sums up 2012 with a look back at everything that defined the last 12 months that were. What many may not realize, however, is this year marks the decade anniversary since Skillz began the tradition. And going off indication, the last.
As the final song on his final studio album, Thoughts Become Things, I refuse to believe this is the concluding track of its ilk for two simple reasons. One, because by now it’s a Hip-Hop novelty. You know, something we can call our own and a number that perpetually leaves you saying, “Oh yeah, that did happen this year didn’t it? I forgot all about that.”
The “Rap Up” is as expected and needed in late-December as holiday parties and using vacation time accumulated throughout the year before starting anew January 1. And two, he can make a small amount of change every year off this by putting it on iTunes. Chances are it doesn’t fall in the ballpark of his ghostwriting duties, but there’s nothing wrong with a side hustle.
So, yes, enjoy the “Rap Up 2012″ because it is a fun listen above anything else. I’ll just believe this tradition is over when there’s no “Rap Up 2013″ by the time New Year’s Day 2014 rolls around.
