Each member of the crew has their own distinct style of music, but if there’s one song where we can expect all of them show up and just spit, it’s Funk Volume’s annual ushering of the new year song. The latest installment, aptly titled “Funk Volume 2013,” is built more like a traditional track than 2012’s version and features the newest signee Jarren Benton in addition to the usual suspects of Dizzy Wright, Hopsin, and SwizZz. The video tells its own story, but the verses are just wrecking balls, demolishing the beat with wordplay, rapid-fire flow, and a brazen disregard for anybody’s feelings.
Off of a couple listens, I’m inclined to cast my vote in for Jarren, but Dizzy comes in at a real close second. To those of you that dislike Hopsin and SwizZz for being gimmicky, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see that there’s none of that on “FV 2013.” Like I mentioned earlier, it’s just five minutes of ferocious lyricism. But as with any posse cut, there’s a certain level competition that comes inherently within the song. So naturally, we have to take to the masses. Who comes out on top on “FV 2013?”
As an extra, the record’s also a free download at Funk Volume’s SoundCloud.
