After showing out on Trinidad James’ casually fun “Southside,” and fresh off the release of his own single “Gucci Mane,” Atlanta’s ForteBowie dropped off his new project, Vice Haus, last week. Entirely self-produced, the EP finds Forte continuing to mix and match his down south raps with smooth R&B and alt-pop leanings—in part taking the form of the rap-sung hybrid style that has been all the rage the last few years.
More than in the past, Forte shows a knack for adorning his raps with the right touches—floating background melodies, cut up soul samples, crawling piano loops—but his singing still brings out his best. Songs like “Little League Love,” a swinging slice of soulful dance-pop, make you think he’d be better off following that type of sound more singularly. But there are enough hints in his cadences and flows to suggest there may be another level still to reach in his rap game.
