As bold proclamations go, media today doesn’t show much restraint in the attempt to grab potential readers’ attention. So it goes for New York Times Magazine who featured Frank Ocean on the cover of their latest issue and gave him the distinction of the “Self-Made Prince of Pop.”
There’s no denying Ocean makes popular music – a testament to his Channel Orange being up for six different prizes, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. But is it too much, too soon to crown an artist who has only released one project? Does Ocean deserve the title of royalty already? Going further, should his form of popular music be considered “Pop” in genre?
