Prepare to feel old: Independence Day came out 17 years ago. But because audiences couldn’t get enough of Will Smith and Jeff f*cking Goldblum kicking alien ass back in 1996, why not green-light a couple of sequels? Per EW, not only is this reality happening, but director Roland Emmerich has some details:
”The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back … And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”
Independence Day was great when it came out, but re-watching it now is kind of a chore. That’s not necessarily its fault. Given all of the alien movies (some great, some not) to come out since ’96, the film seems outdated and archaic. A simple retread ‘oh, no! The aliens’ friends came to attack Earth, again!’ won’t be enough. Furthermore, Will Smith has yet to sign up for the cast, although Emmerich says the sequels will focus on a new generation: “It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over.”
All we know is the director better have an ace of a script up his sleeve, because name recognition alone probably won’t have the kind of pull that Fox hopes it does.
