Hype’s been bubbling around the release of Chicagoan Chance The Rapper’s Acid Rap for a while now. Read the usual drop-off points for Hip-Hop content around the web and buzzwords like “next big thing” or “best tape of 2013” attach themselves to conversations about the project. Granted, some of this mythology is Chance’s own doing and others the work of the authors. Can’t say that Chance isn’t unconventional, because he’s a far cry from what the most noticeable contingent of South Side young guns have been doing.
But it’s Chance’s local rag the Sun-Times proclaiming that Acid Rap‘s the most anticipated rap project to come out of the Windy City since The College Dropout that’s most salient. That’s a lofty designation, considering that The College Dropout‘s influence wasn’t fully felt until years after it changed Hip-Hop culture. But for Chance, being mentioned in the same realm as one of his idols could be prophetic: what TCD did for a young Kanye West Acid Rap could do for Chance.
He’s got big, whimsical singles like “NaNa,” “Good Ass Intro” and “Smoke Again.” The album’s guest list includes Black Hippy’s Ab-Soul, BJ The Chicago Kid and Twista. The production fits his own particular brand of rap. It’s a perfect, brewing storm and who knows? Maybe it will end up being one of the best projects of the year, a Chi-Town work to rank up there alongside TCD.
