Mayer Hawthorne’s music has gotten so much burn around my way, his older material was finally getting played out. Thankfully, my attention didn’t wane long, as Ann Arbor’s throwback hitmaker has just blessed us with his latest single, “Designer Drug.”
Carried by driving drums, a strutting bassline and more dancefloor appeal than a see-through mini-skirt, this well-concocted love ditty succeeds in hitting high notes rightfully deserving long-lasting radio love throughout the summer, while still maintaining Mayer’s relatively nostalgic vibe. In all actuality, this may be his most current-sounding record to date, but still sounds straight out of 1982.
We’ll take that, all day, every day.
