Lauryn Hill went to court Monday expecting to be sentenced for tax evasion. Instead, U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Madeline Cox Arleo gave the singer a break. The ex-Fugees star has until Monday, May 6 to cough up the remaining $504,000 she owes in back taxes or risk being sent to the big house.

Coming up with that kind of money may have just gotten a little easier for Lauryn. Reports say the singer signed a $1 million deal with former label Sony Music last summer. As part of the deal, L-Boogie has to record and release 5 new songs, with more money given if she completes a full-length album. But according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser, she’s yet to begin writing and recording the future hits.

With the two-week window in place, we won’t have to wait long to see what the next chapter holds in the case of L-Boogie Vs. Uncle Sam.
