Well, this is what was poppin’ 15 years ago. What would you add or take away from this list? Also, let’s say someone creates a graphic comparing this list to the most popular and revered records of the past year. Do you get happy or sad?
It’s crazy,I remember reading this issue when it first dropped..this clothes store I used to do errands for had all of the mags you could want lol
Rank ‘em, go.
All ten of those albums are still popping today…absolutely no duds whatsoever. Matter of fact might be 10 classic albums.
Eightball – Lost forgotten classic right there.
I fuck w/ the album but I never felt it was anywhere near as strong as their work together. The shit was a triple disc (okay, a double of 8’s music) and just had too much fat and filler. If he had trimmed it down to one disc, tightened it up, whole diff convo.
that third disc was more of a promo for other Universal artist though but I agree I am glad the “fad” of the multiple disc albums didn’t last long. In the end it just brings down the quality of the record
Disc 1 gets the most replay spins from me. I agree w/ Gotty though, if it was shorter it may be a diff story.
Greatest year for hip hop of all time, I remember when 8 out of the top 10 on billboard was hip hop albums at the same time!
I’d like to add Black Star to that list too. But god damn those albums are full on bangers. Really need to go back and listen to It’s Dark and Hell is Hot again. Been too long. “1, 2, X is coming for you…”
you good sir are so correct. fact is people didn’t really pick up on that album until about four years later when Mos became more known and Kweli had “Get By”
One of my favorite albums to this day. Made me a fan of Kweli. I honestly bought the album mainly because of Mos Def. Still gets play from me.

i see what u did there…
just trying to help out lol.
Pete Rock – Soul Survivor
M.O.P. – First Family 4 Life
Soul Survivor yesssss
I own every album on the list. With the exception of Gangstarr only cuz I never got into Guru as an MC but I know I’m missing some great Premier production.
Hieroglypics – 3rd Eye Vision
Black Eyed Peas – Behind The Front
D.J. Honda – HII
Lyricists Lounge Vol.1
Xzibit – 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz
very good year for the HOP!!!
other great dungeon family albums dropped that year too.
Goodie Mob – Still Standing
I can’t think of a rap album since Aquemini that’s topped it. Don’t know if that reflects poorly on the last 15 or proves just how good that album is.
Just how good that album is. Naming an album from any time, any genre, that tops it is a difficult task.
Yup. Only thing I can think of that’s beyond that is Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” lol.
And that’s reaching right there.
Canibus should be on this list……I can’t even say that with a straight face. lol
Heltah Skeltah – Magnum Force was a pretty dope album
This was the begining of the end for the great 90s era of rap. No Limit and Cash Money killed it and led the way to a more stupid hip-hop.
definitely ushered in an influence that hasn’t been the best for the HOP. #fuckbeingpoliticallycorrect
I own 8 out of 10 of those albums.
sad. I’m crying
