Rick Ross Apologizes For Losing His Reebok Contract

By / 04.12.13

Rick Ross finally saw the error of his ways regarding rape. Or maybe it was the loss of a fat check. Whatever. Either way, he issued (another) apology, this time perhaps a little more pensive and regretful since Reebok parted ways with him yesterday.

“Before I am an artist, I am a father, a son, and a brother to some of the most cherished women in the world. So for me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes and regrets. As an artist, one of the most liberating things is being able to paint pictures with my words. But with that comes a great responsibility. And most recently, my choice of words was not only offensive, it does not reflect my true heart. And for this, I apologize.

To every woman that has felt the sting of abuse, I apologize. I recognize that as an artist I have a voice and with that, the power of influence. To the young men who listen to my music, please know that using a substance to rob a woman of her right to make a choice is not only a crime, it’s wrong and I do not encourage it. To my fans, I also apologize if I have disappointed you. I can only hope that this sparks a healthy dialogue and that I can contribute to it.”

If I had a shitload of time, I’d say a lot but it’s Friday and I don’t because I want to hit the streets.

Here’s the thing, Rick. The apology is too late at this point. Even if the intent was true, nobody’s going to readily accept it because it looks like it didn’t matter until a loss of money was involved. Had this apology been issued previously – and not that babble you pushed initially – things may have worked out in your favor.

But that would have required you to break character, which you’ve never been one to do, which anyone who read your delusional GQ interview a while ago knows. Instead of being Rozay The Bawse, you should’ve taken the shades off and just been William. William who has a mom, maybe a daughter, sister, etc. who realizes that rapping rape probably wasn’t the most clever lyric. But Bawse, even if your role required that you stay in character, you would have realized that even street dudes aren’t fond of rape and abuse. I mean, hell, you worked in a jail, right Officer Ross? We all have seen enough episodes of Lock Up to know that rapists don’t fair well, right?

Even better, if you would have just shut the fuck up like Wayne did when the Emmitt Till shit hit the fan, you maybe could’ve made it out unscathed. I call this oath of silence “The Biggie Approach.” Remember how Biggie handled the situation with Pac? Remember what he said? Exactly. He didn’t say much of anything. Rick, you would’ve fared better if you had just stfu and let the label issue the apologies, just like Wayne did. Instead…well, you know.

And here’s the tricky thing (and I swear I mentioned this before but I guess not). Ross, the slope’s getting real slippery right now. At first, we thought you had the magic potion because you took 50’s hardest blows and came out standing. From there, you attacked the charts and found the music mountain’s peak. Most successful people – be they businessmen, athletes or entertainers – will tell you that getting to the top isn’t the hard part. Staying there is where things get difficult.

The seizures. The BET scuffle. The GDs. The shootout on the freeway. All the signs of hubris we’ve seen and documented over the past few months. Now this.

It’s usually never a big crushing blow that will knock a reigning champ down. It’s the small dinks to the armor that lead to his demise.

Ross, keep your head up bro. This too shall pass. While waiting, take the time to reexamine your surroundings and patch up the holes in your power circle. One thing we know for sure is that the fall from the top is seemingly never-ending before your reach rock bottom.
