Scarface Wonders “Who Stole The Soul” Of Hip-Hop, Compares It To A “Drive-Thru”

By 04.29.13

Scarface started a huge, but necessary discussion across the web recently, including in our comments section on Saturday. HardKnock TV caught up with the legendary Houston MC and he didn’t hold back when discussing the state of our music, who’s pushing the buttons and what role consumers play. Fast forward to today and we get part final video from the segment and it sounds like ‘Face is still on a roll.

“…Our interview starts with Scarface asking why white contemporary singers sell more albums than their black counterparts. Scarface proceeds to say that he heard an executive at a TV network that deals with music say that they are now going to target the network for a young white audience. Facemob is concerned that the new generation doesn’t know who Kool Herc is and soon won’t know who people like KRS-One and himself are because they are being written out of Hip Hop history. “If you gave a fuck about this culture in any shape form or fashion you would not put the shit out that you put out. You would slam the door on artists that came in there with that shit!”

Finding a starting point between this video and the previous one is challenging. From my standpoint, “old rappers” will never become irrelevant, word to The Primer series, if we all make it a point to keep their names and material circulating as a form of oral tradition.

As much as Scarface left a strong impression with his words, our readers did the same and there’s no side to choose in this situation. First and foremost, I was happy to see all of the informed opinions and responses, which indicate what I’ve always believed to be our strength: our small community isn’t asleep to what’s rumored to be going on either behind closed doors or through the airwaves (or as ‘Face calls it, the “crud.”)

We don’t have answers, at least not right now. But, we have a starting point for the larger discussion.
