Summer time is easily the best time of the year when it comes to movies. Sure the winter is when all the Oscar buzz-worthy flicks hit the big screen but the summer is usually when you get the big and usually more original films. So while I’m beyond hype for Iron Man 3 next week, The Purge is another movie that’s piqued my interest.
Starring the Ethan Hawek (Training Day) and the usually evil Lena Headey, The Purge is a psychological thriller/horror film that looks to mesh the usual “family-stuck-in-home-against-crazy-killers” genre with some potentially interesting social commentary about our country’s prison overcrowding plus human’s proclivity towards deviance. The trailer does a good job of conveying feelings tension and claustrophobia in a holy-shit-if-this-ever-comes-true-we’re-screwed kind of way.
If it can manage to make us think while scaring us out of our collective seats, then The Purge might be a hit. With Michael Bay as the film’s producer, I still have my reservations but I guess we’ll find out what the movie is made of on June 3rd.
