100-Word Review: Tyga’s ‘Hotel California’

By 04.12.13

As one of the most popular West Coast rappers out, Tyga attempts to leverage that coastal love on Hotel California – but only gets so far. It doesn’t matter if he’s sampling Tony Toni Tone (“It Never Rains”), Dr. Dre (“Dope) or lifting an Ice Cube line (“500 Degrees”), his efforts are so self-serving, you’re left wondering if the Compton-bred MC’s paying homage or milking ideas his fanbase will inevitably gravitate towards. Adding those cheap cuts to watered-down versions of the simplistic braggadocio he’s helped turn the scene into only serves an album that is straddling the line of cohesiveness and lacks genuine substance to fall back on.

Standout Songs: “Diss Song,” “Enemies”
Songs To Skip: “Get Rich,” “Hijack”
