Busta Rhymes and Pharrell always have the potential to create something interesting and unique when they link up. Busta’s high-energy approach, commanding vocal presence and willingness to take risks blends perfectly with Pharrell’s boundless creativity. “Twerk It” draws from Busta’s Jamaican roots, as he chats, in a throaty patois, things that would make Vanessa Del Rio blush.
Pharrell’s production is typically effective, pairing tectonic plate shifting bass with effects straight from an old school ’80s cabinet video game. The hook takes the track over the top with a frenetic increase in BPMs and Max Headroom (One person will get that reference.) vocal effects. Think of Big Sean’s single “A$$” as this song’s younger cousin that grew up in the states. Busta back? Could be. I expect “Twerk It” to murder clubs this summer, and I can’t wait for the video.
