All those old Charlotte Hornets Starter windbreakers and Vlade Divac retro jerseys might take on a new life within the next few years, and not just because their nostalgia value’s picked up again.
Eye On Basketball is reporting that the Charlotte Bobcats are considering changing their name back to the Hornets, which was the name of the original NBA franchise located in the city from 1988 to 2002. The team moved to New Orleans after the 2002 season.
Current Bobcats owner Michael Jordan floated the idea back in February, polled fans and found the reaction “mixed”; however, the change is possible, considering the New Orleans Hornets have recently adopted the Pelicans moniker. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has indicated that, if a name change should occur, it will take at least 18 months to implement.
Certain Charlotte fan groups champion the move, and it’s entirely possible that the name could be immensely popular, restoring the Hornets’ history and athletic sartorial swagger. The only people who would suffer: eBay sellers trying to make money off old Charlotte Hornets merch.
