Earlier this week, it was reported that second round NFL draft pick Geno Smith had signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports. Well, now the NFL Players Association is throwing a flag on the play, claiming the rapper may have had a hand in recruiting the newly acquired Jets player. What’s the problem? Apparently, Jay may have violated the association’s “runner rule,” which states “only NFLPA-certified agents may be involved in the recruitment of clients.”
Because Hov and Geno kicked it prior to the player signing with Roc Nation, the NFLPA is wondering what role Hov had in his decision to pic Kim Miale and Roc Nation as his representatives. To make matters worse, John Thornton, advisor to Geno, was quoted as saying he was in meetings with both Jay and the rookie, but later said he was misquoted.
No word on how this will affect Jay’s sports agency if the investigation finds him guilty of breaking the rules.
