Lauryn Hill Sentenced To 3 Months In Prison For Tax Evasion

By / 05.06.13

Lauryn Hill went to court Monday, thinking she could spend as much as three years in prison for tax evasion. Luckily for the Grammy award winner, the judge only sentenced her to three months. Lauryn, who paid her whopping $970,000 tax bill hours before the sentencing, will also spend an additional three months in home confinement after serving her prison bid.

As for the judge’s leniency, U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo took into consideration the fact that Ms. Hill paid off her back taxes, past charitable work, contributions to music and this being her first criminal offense.

In a speech made to the judge before her sentencing, Lauryn explained that she became a recluse for years because she believed the recording industry was using her to make money. She also admitted to not paying her taxes during her “underground” years but said she always intended on paying it.

No word yet on when Lauryn will begin her three month stretch or where.
