I’ve spent the better part of the last calendar year tutoring and mentoring kids in a Watts elementary school. My last day is Thursday, and you’d better believe I’m going to miss each and every one of those crazy little knuckleheads. Their hyped reactions to the simplest shit – greeting the slightest teacher mistake to a chorus of “boos” – their constant snitching on each other, their brutally honest observations (“Mr. L, you look like you’ve gained weight since the beginning of the year”). Everything will be missed when my year is done and my contract is expired.
Maybe that’s why I found it funny that No Malice would pick now to drop such a goofy trailer for upcoming solo debut Hear Ye Him. Dressing up as a teacher for the lulz (and to teach, of course), the eldest Thornton bro does his part to keep the priorities of the youths straight. Wanna be a rapper? Not in Mr. Thornton’s classroom, as he intensely points out.
The entire video is good and entertaining, but what does it mean in the grand scope of the project? Well, considering the rapper’s name-change, the religious affiliations and now this righteous trailer, we could be in store for some Ma$e-like escape into the Land Of Conscious Rapping, which may or may not be a bad thing. But if there’s anybody who deserves the benefit of the doubt, No Malice does.
