Not long after Jay-Z shook up the Hip-Hop world and The White House press corps with his “Open Letter,” Kanye West saw a small cloud of dust cover his very expensive shoes, as the proverbial gauntlet landed at his feet. Seeing big brother get all of the attention was enough for him to peek his head out from his self-imposed exile and survey the current landscape.
West, however, is calculated and deliberate, not reactive. Instead of letting even a crumb of what he’s got coming in June tumble out of his studio before it’s a finished product, Kanye unleashed G.O.O.D. Music’s dopeboy extraordinaire Pusha T, who thrives off of competition. “Numbers On The Board” was a sparse, twitchy, statement of a track that likely sent more than a few rappers back to the drawing board.
Now Pusha’s vivid lyricism gets the video treatment, where sleek imagery accompanies Pusha’s hitman-like detachment, and Don Cannon’s operatic distortion. Pusha once accurately said that in the “spirit of competition, one verse could cause jihad.” Who will be next to step to the front lines and take aim?
