I try to avoid recorded “freestyles” like the plague, but I’d listen to just about anyone rhyme over Nas’ “Stay.” That it just happens to be Big K.R.I.T. rapping on No I.D.’s gorgeous soul beat certainly doesn’t hurt.
Not unlike most other rapper-producers, K.R.I.T. still carries a bit of a chip on his shoulder when attacking other people’s beats — the exercise seems to force him out of the comfort zone he sometimes tunnels into in his own work.
Not that the musical swipe for “KING Pt. 3” is a dramatic change of pace for K.R.I.T., the looping saxophone eminating crackling warmth. He’s an expectedly good fit, waxing spiritual and using the track as a chance to vent.
It may not top the original, but it’s worthy of a listen in its own right.
