“I don’t know at what point exactly it started to be a problem. I just remember liking it more and more.”
Those words by Eminem are familiar ones. Most of us know someone who’s used them or maybe it was us who said them. But, most people will pill addictions know the situations Eminem describes in the upcoming documentary How To Make Money Selling Drugs.
Directed by Matthew Cooke and produced by Entourage‘s Adrian Grenier, How To Make Money… does much of what the title suggest: informs people how to make a living illegally, while warning of the pitfalls. The film itself has gotten mixed reviews ranging from “clever” to being dubbed “the shallowest and most glib film of the year.” Whatever the case, it doesn’t take any significance to hearing Em describe how his addiction to Vicodin lead him to the brink of death.
“When I took my first Vicodin, it was like this feeling of ‘ahh.’ Like everything was not only mellow, but didn’t feel any pain,” Eminem revealed. “It just kind of numbed things…People tried to tell me that I had a problem. I would say, ‘Get that f***kin’ person outta here. I can’t believe they said that sh** to me.’ They knew nothing about my f***kin’ life. Are they out of their f***in’ mind? I’m not out there shooting heroin. I’m not f***ing out there putting coke up my nose. I’m not smoking crack.”
Pill addiction tends to start at as prescribed medication under doctor’s care. Unlike other drugs, pills are legal, which serves as a justification in the user’s mind. The euphoria Em describes escalates the addiction until what was once healthy usage becomes life threatening. As Em details it, he faced a certain death if he kept up his Vicodin abuse. In one specific incident, he recalls ending up in the hospital.
“Had I have got to the hospital about two hours later, I would have died. My organs were shutting down. My liver, kidneys, everything. They were gonna have to put me on dialysis. They didn’t think I was gonna make it. My bottom was gonna be death.”
Thankfully, Em recognized his bottom before his bottom found him.
