2 Chainz: Rappers Haven’t “Stepped Up” To Defend Criticism Of Their Lyrics

Recently, 2 Chainz sat down with RapFix’s Sway to discuss perceptions and realities, as they deal with video chicks and, more specifically, song lyrics. Chainz has consistently proven himself to be wise with his words and this chat was no exception as he admitted that he and other rappers have taken to using caution for fear of their checks getting cut.

“Everything is so delicate, from homosexuality to these diseases that people can’t control, to where, when you’re just trying to be slightly creative and just try to use a metaphor in a different way that people can appreciate, maybe laugh about, it’s taken out of context the wrong way,” 2 Chainz said with a hint of exasperation.

“One end, you want to talk about the first amendment, you want to talk about freedom of speech,” 2 Chainz explained,” but on the other end, everything is so delicate, you cannot say anything. What hasn’t happened is that we all haven’t stepped up and taken a stand on, ‘We just gonna have freedom of speech.’

At this point, I’ve never been a big fan of being politically correct so I’m tired of seeing and hearing rappers backpedaling over their lyrics. Say it, stick with it and stop giving a damn. The music thrives off creativity, not restraint.

But as rap’s gotten more corporate, we’re at a crossroads where artists are holding back for fear of the repercussions Chainz mentions here. Songs being pulled from retailers, labels poking their noses in to question content and sponsors withdrawing support to the tune of “millions of dollars…in deals.” Using the guarded approach, the end product – the music – is stilted and limited. And walking the tightrope that Tity mentions means that rap will eventually fall off while trying maintain a balance between business and self-expression.

Then again, Ice-T let us know years ago that there’s freedom of speech…just watch what you say.
