Coolio had a fun music career. Between “Gangsta Paradise” and dropping the intro for Nickelodeon’s Kenan & Kel (people don’t forget!), the Compton rapper was one of the brightest stars of the mid-90s. But that was then.
Now, Coolio’s aiming for his next crossover attempt: becoming a professional chef. Following up his 2009 cookbook, Cookin’ With Coolio, Coolio is auctioning off the rights to his entire musical catalog for a chance at funding his next career*. That’s right; for the right fee, you could own the rights to “Gangsta Paradise.”
This all comes from Rolling Stone, who reports that the rapper takes in around $23,000 annually in royalties. Throw in a couple of random festival appearances (he was a headliner at “Gathering Of The Juggalos” back in 2009), and you can imagine that he’s still worth at least $30-40k a year. Sure, it’s a far cry from what he was bringing home in the 90’s. But, let’s be real about this thing for a second: watching Coolio wage culinary war on Chopped would be pretty damn entertaining.
* – No matter what he does, it beats what he was doing the last time we posted about Coolio.
