The iPod Shuffle – Lupe Fiasco’s “The Instrumental”

My move across California began on last Thursday, and through six hours of driving, I went through several albums cover to cover. En route to an unfamiliar, new place, music that I know well was calming and put my mind relatively at ease. It started with high school mainstay, Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor, to It Was Written (thanks to Lu declaring it as a supreme influence) before transferring to random smatterings of Linkin Park, mostly because of Mike Shinoda’s handprints on F&L. But in between all of that, “The Instrumental” found its way back into rotation throughout random points of the drive.

Young Fiasco’s intricate story of an isolated boy with an imaginary robot friend may sound like a foolish fairy tale, but it’s really something that every kid goes through at some point or another during their childhood. Feelings of loneliness, coupled with that ‘thing,’ whether sentient or not, that’s the only object that completely understands. More often than not it’s just a figment of the imagination, someone temporarily conjuring up a foreign personality to accompany their own.

And throughout my trek with home in the rearview, going south where I won’t know anyone, the thought of having someone with me, real or not, was just a little more comforting.
