Rappers Doing Good: Nas Helps Raise $30,000 For D.C. Family Left Homeless After Fire

By / 08.09.13

“We just knew we had to do something.”

That’s what Nas told Washington D.C.’s ABC7. His reaction came in response to hearing the tragic story of Stanley Young and his family of eight children. Young and family recently were left homeless as a result of a fire and had already suffered a tragedy when the mother of his children died last year.

The story struck a chord with Nasir, enough to use Twitter to spread the word and start contributing. Nas told ABC News that “[Stanley Young's] the true American dream. A man who would do whatever it takes to take care of his kids. I’m the same way and I just think he’s great.”

And not only did he ask others for small donations, but he also put his money where his mouth was, making a $5,000 offering. He also helped set up a Crowdtilt fundraising page he urged his Twitter followers to donate, too. In less than one day, $18,000 was raised and the total amount donated is currently over $30K toward a goal of $50,000 set by the rapper.

It’s a very kind gesture by Nas and much different than the average entertainer using social media as a promotions vehicle. Also, donating money and celebrity were one thing. It was more selfless to see him dedicating time and resources, things more valuable than money, to a man and family he’s never man met.

“He don’t have to do what he had to do,” Young says of Nas. “People, strangers I don’t even know, never met before in my life, are helping and that’s amazing.”
