With all the (well-deserved) hype and discussion surrounding Mr. Lamar’s verse on “Control”, we might have missed out on some surprise bangers from another corner of the Top Dawg regime. A relatively new recruit to TDE, St. Louis songstress SZA (pronounced So-ZA) dropped a hidden gem with her recent S EP (download it here). Possessing a mellow but sultry and siren-like vibe similar to Jhene Aiko mixed with Megan James of Purity Ring, SZA’s jazz and electronica infused sound seems to be a perfect fit the young guns running the yard.
Celebrating the win by her label mate and to keep heads rocking until she drops her next project Z, SZA gives us two cuts in “Teen Spirit,” produced by WondaGurl, and “Julia, produced by Felix Snow and Dave Free). If this is the type of talent TDE is attracting, then more than just the Hip-Hop game has something to be worried about.
