Welp….Rock The Bells Got Cancelled In DC & NY

By / 09.26.13

The best wedding gift my wife and I got this year was an all-inclusive, completely paid-for trip to Rock The Bells in Washington DC from my brother in-law. Now, thanks to terribly poor planning from Guerilla Union – the promoters of the bi-coastal hip-hop festival, our weekend is wide open.

As I was literally packing my bags for a trip to see half my favorite artists, news broke that promoters pulled the plug on the event this weekend in DC and the following weekend in NY, due to lack of ticket sales. Two days before performances were set to start, the geniuses over at Guerilla Union realized they couldn’t afford to fit the bill on their own 10 year anniversary event. Pardon my ignorance, but how the hell does that happen? Was MC Hammer running their finances? Did the unnecessary Eazy-E and ODB holograms put their bottom line over the top? Or, are festivals just becoming over-saturated?

Whatever went down, I’m extremely bummed. This was about to be my first Rock The Bells experience – actually, my first legit festival experience, period – and now I’m left with broken plans and a bad taste in my mouth. Even worse, my brother-in-law is stuck with paid-for hotel rooms that he can’t get out of, just like plenty of other people coming to the event from out of town. God help them, if they weren’t driving like us and shelled out dough for plane tickets.

So, to fans headed out East this weekend that are just hearing this terrible news, I feel your pain. To Guerilla Union, reimbursing tickets isn’t enough. You were encouraging people to buy tickets yesterday and now the whole event is dunzo? That ain’t right. Swallow your pride, take a loss and follow through on your word. That’s what a reputable company would do. Hell, a temporary monetary loss is a lot easier to fix than a long-term branding issue.

Because, quite frankly, Rock The Bells telling me I can’t go this year is basically solidifying why I won’t be going from here on out.
