Alabama, Florida State (Not Oregon) Top First BCS Rankings

By 10.21.13

As the title of Tinsley’s college football recap indicated yesterday, this week’s college football polls will look different. And they do.

Before we highlight the shakers and movers in the AP top-ten, it’s necessary to note that Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State hold onto the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively. But outside that, Florida State slides into No. 3 after their dominating win over now-No. 9 Clemson, Missouri and Baylor move up to the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, while Miami (Fl), Stanford and Texas Tech (Kliff!) take the No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10 rankings. Peep the full rankings here.

But the AP’s small potatoes after this weekend. Week 8 sees the first BCS rankings released, which still determine who plays in the national championship game and the four other BCS bowls. The BCS top-ten is nearly identical to the AP’s; however, there are two important differences: Missouri and Stanford come in at No. 5 and No. 6 (in the AP, the Tigers are at No. 6 and the Cardinal’s at No. 8) and Florida State occupies the No. 2 spot over the AP’s No. 2, Oregon.

Stanford’s inclusion near the top-5 despite one loss has a lot to do with its strength of schedule, which Phil Steele ranked as the eighth-toughest in the nation. And as for that coveted second spot, Florida State’s 51-14 victory over then-No. 3 Clemson probably endeared them more to the computers than Oregon’s win over Washington State. But only .0028 of a point separates the Seminoles from the Ducks, so Oregon fans shouldn’t despair with plenty of season left to play.

Check below for the full BCS standings and each team’s computer average. Leave comments, general concerns and conspiracy theories in the comments because that’s why these polls exist in the first place.
