The 100-Word Review: Ariana Grande’s ‘Yours Truly’

By 10.04.13

Ariana Grande plays it safe on Yours Truly by recreating microcosms of hit pop songs over the years. “Baby I” fulfills the Mariah comparisons and borrows bits from Bieber’s “Baby” and Destiny’s Child’s “No No No (Pt. 2).” Other favorites are “The Way” with Mac Miller (English and Spanglish versions!) and “Right There” with Big Sean, even though both would’ve fared fine without the features because the songs don’t rely on them for attention. Even if she is the perfect little engineered pop star, Grande’s debut shows off her vocal capabilities and a bright future for the former Nickelodeon star.

Standout Songs: “Baby I,” “The Way,” “Right There,” “Piano”

Songs To Skip: “Popular,” “Almost Is Never Enough”
