Childish Gambino’s “3005” is something like a love song. A rapping love song in the vein of “She Keeps On Passin’ Me By” or “Around The Way Girl” perhaps. One where the lead character playfully pledges his undying love to the spottieottiedopaliscious apple of his eye. You know because rap really doesn’t do that well in admitting to feelings of affection for women, not any that mean anything past sex.
For Gambino, he’s not all that afraid of saying he’s locked in love until “3005.” What’s more to like is he embraces his inner nerd without coming off too contrived, which happens sometimes, at least to my ears. Nope, just rapping mixed with a little bit of CG carrying a tune to help create a makeshift chorus.
Presumably, the record’s taken from his because the internet, which he teased a week or so ago and should be dropping either late this year or early 2014, depending on how you interpret his “available this winter break” remark.
