Before rushing to judgement, realize two things. One, “Heartbreaker” is nothing like his Miley Cyrus collaboration “Twerk.” Duh. And two, “Heartbreaker” is a damn good pop ballad. Really good, actually.
The first of 10 consecutive “journals” he’ll be dropping every Monday for the next 10 weeks, Bieber’s “Heartbreaker” is, as he described it, “A song for people going through a heartbreak—like I was when I wrote it. It means so much to me to be able to share what I was, and still am going through, with my fans. I’m very proud of this song and I hope it gives my fans some insight into my heart.”
I’ve long been of the belief, difficult periods – “difficult” being subjective for each situation – often times produce the best music. It allows for an artist to strip whatever superficial qualities money and fame nurture and musically expose a side of themselves that sticks to the ribs longer than radio spins provide (see someone like the ’90s Mary J. Blige).
If there is anything I could’ve done without, however, it’s the talking part towards the end. But that’s splitting hairs at this point. Let that hurt out over Selena Gomez over some vintage pop/R&B goodness, J. Bieber. Let that hurt out.
