“I heard a hater say I’d never be more than J. Dilla’s little brother, I’d never be more than an insignificant other, I’d never be more than a video stand-in, but here I am, still standing”

You’ve got to appreciate the grind behind Illa J’s continued growth as an artist. As he mentions in the lyrics above from the Yancey Boys’ latest single “Quicksand,” the rapper/producer has come along way from the original YB project with his big bro, playing a key part in three solid releases this year – the slept-on Slum Village album Evolution, their previous mixtape with Mick Boogie Dirty Slums 2 and now the latest album from his group with Frank Nitt, Sunset Blvd.

Like the featured single below with Common and singer Dezi Page, the entire project finds Illa and Nitt steadily climbing uphill over unreleased production from the late Jay Dee, delivering fourteen tracks that effectively bring the most out of the simplistic brilliance amidst his brother’s beats.

Support the push for greatness and cop the Yancy Boys’ latest album on iTunes or on some always Deelicious vinyl.
