Critical consensus around Justin Timberlake’s massive 2013 seemed to sour right around the time it was revealed that this comeback might have been borne out of something other than artistic calling. Unfortunately for JT, the sequel to The 20/20 Experience doesn’t mount much of a defense.
Part 2 finds Timberlake floundering without an identity. The lyrical clunkers come fast and frequent (the vampire-themed “SexyBack” rehash “True Blood” is borderline jump-the-shark territory). The reductive whining over song length is actually justified here. Only the moody arena pop of songs like “TKO” and “Amensia” save Part 2 from being a complete waste.
Standout Songs: “TKO,” “Amnesia,” “Only When I Walk Away”
Songs to Skip: “Gimme What I Don’t Know (I Want),” “True Blood,” “Murder”
