Lil Durk is all the rage with kids these days, or so I hear. Signed To The Streets (download it here) has been a personal favorite of the year, and with French Montana, Rick Ross, and Meek Mill on the “Dis Ain’t What You Want” remix, it’s sure to bring more attention to the young Chicago rapper. Aside from adding their names in bright lights to the song, they carry along in largely the same vein as the original.
Part of what makes Durk so engaging is that he is completely open to reminding us that he’s more than a tough street dude, but he does so in measured doses that might go unnoticed. Before French, Rozay, and Meek came along, he had a verse where he says “daddy doing life,” which always made him sound a little lost and vulnerable. Whether that idea is supposed to come full circle or not, and it’s completely possible that I’m reaching here, it was sweet to hear Rozay say “Lil Durk my family” in the opening bars. And with the way the music world’s beginning to embrace Durk, his family’s only growing bigger.
