Rihanna’s in trouble. That’s the overall connection between the lyrics and visual interpretation we’re supposed to take away from her video for “What Now.”
Speaking on the clip for her Unapologetic track, the singer made it clear she wanted to take a different direction than the expected. “Everybody’s probably expecting narrative type of video, a love story of some sorts or something really soft and pretty,” she told MTV. “It is pretty and kind of soft, but it’s really a little demented.”
Seeing the singer stranded alone in a room might give off a sense of dementia but the song’s lyrics – “There’s no one to call cause I’m just playing games with them now” – are what leave the most lasting image of Rihanna and “What Now.” Her love life stays in the headlines and, even though she displays a “fuck it” attitude most of the time, the overflow of emotion and raw thoughts suggested by the song gives a different perspective of what’s going on within.
Guess things aren’t all as simple as they seem on the surface as “What Now” ends up sounding more like a question than a statement.
