How about some hardcore? Kool G Rap and Necro–a.k.a. The Godfathers–deliver exactly that with their release Once Upon A Crime. Wasting no time setting the tone with “Teflon Dons,” the pair catch an album’s worth of bodies within two verses over a sinister backdrop courtesy of Necro, the project’s sole producer. Though Necro’s influence is dominant, Kool G Rap often steals the show with quotables on tracks like “The City” and “Unsub.” The subject matter may be repetitive and there’s nothing for the radio, but Once Upon A Crime is a gem if you’re into graphic, NYC street rap.

Standout Songs: “Black Medicine,” “The Pain,” “Once Upon A Crime”

Songs to Skip: “We’ll Kill You, Gangsta,” “American Sickos”
