Remember that time Adrien Broner got meme’ed by Marcos Maidana? Well, Broner wants to do it again.
Despite his mentor/big brother/idol Floyd Mayweather publicly saying he should do otherwise, Broner has exercised the rematch clause and will fight Maidana again on either April 19th or April 26th.
Broner was beaten badly in the December fight, going down twice, taking an epic dive after a head butt and leaving the ring before completing his customary post fight interview but this may be the best move for his image. The loudmouth Broner was shut up, literally, after the first fight, and despite showing heart all night after being rocked repeatedly, and later giving Maidana his proper credit for a job well done, but his antics before, during and after the fight wiped that all away.
Now he has a chance to redeem himself, not only in the ring, but also with his attitude outside of it pre and post-fight. Since the loss Broner has said all the right things, praising Maidana several times on Twitter and elsewhere, never making excuses for the loss and never backing down from his insistence that they give it another go.
April is the best time for a fight of this magnitude as Canelo Alvarez’s comeback bout is set for March 8th and Floyd Mayweather pretty much a lock to fight the May 3rd in Las Vegas. Speaking of Floyd, Maidana locking horns with Broner again almost assuredly means that Floyd’s opponent on Cinco De Mayeather this year will be Amir Khan (*deep sigh*). There’s no venue set for Broner-Maidana II, but the Alamodome in San Antonio, the home of the first fight, and the StubHub Center in Carson California are the favorites as of now.
