Come summer, here’s what’s about the Lakers. They’ll have a few dollars to toss around at free agents with the enticing party favors that are Hollywood, the Staples Center and playing with one of the 10 best basketball players of all-time, Kobe Bryant. Here’s what we don’t know – who exactly the hell they’re going to convince to take the bait.
For months, Carmelo Anthony’s name has emerged as the front-runner to take his talents out west. Just don’t expect the face of the franchise, Kobe Bean, to openly recruit the man who broke his Madison Square Garden scoring record on Friday. Before Sunday’s game versus the Knicks, Bryant spoke to the media about the very topic.
The popular Melo rumor of the moment has him landing in Chicago (if he choses not to re-sign in NY) pairing alongside Joakim Noah, Jimmy Butler and presumably Derrick Rose. Which, you know, makes a lot more sense on paper than it does in comparison to somehow having he and Kobe both share the rock in L.A. Currently, the Lakers stand at 16-29, riding a four game losing streak and sit 9.5 games out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference.
Much can and will happen between the last week in January and the last week in June. But I can’t shake the thought out of my head of Joel Embiid wearing a Lakers jersey next fall.
