Bo might have never known the feeling of hoisting the Lombardi trophy for the Raiders, but Nike’s still paying homage to the dual sport legend with the updated Nike Lunar 180 Trainer SC as part of the ‘Silver Speed’ collection for Super Bowl XLVIII.
While the general structure of the original SC Trainer remains similar, the materials were overhauled to bring the shoe into 2014 with a bang. Leather is replaced with lightweight and durable Hyperfuse, which also leads to less creasing and double plus for us sneakerheads. The forefoot has Lunarlon cushioning which manifests itself in the ridge-like appearance. Curiously, the heel cushioning is only updated by about two or three years with the Air 180 unit. No complaints from us though.
The biggest issue we had with the shoe came in the form of the swoosh and tongue emblem. Instead of a matte grey, silver, or reflective 3M material to resemble snowy weather, Nike used some sort of chameleon chroma-ish color that looks like an oily icicle. Frankly, it throws the whole shoe off and looks kind of fruity but, hey, to each his/her own.
The Nike Lunar 180 Trainer SC ‘Super Bowl’ releases on January 27 at select retailers.
