Pinpointing which artists will blow up isn’t a scientific process. Try as we might, no one knows when the next big thing will happen and go from tiny little nothing to phenomenon. The determining factors vary too much. But, it’s easy to hear when a rapper comes to the surface offering music that will make an impact, if given a chance, and that’s where Topaz Jones stands.
With each early listen he’s given, his Honeymoon Suite looks and sounds like a complete package. His rhyme style carries a slippery-when-wet flow and a sharp eye for details, bracketed by complimentary production that accentuates his words. Relying on Robert Glasper’s rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Gasping For Breath” carries on Jones’ string of quality – in his music, the accompanying artwork and, now, his videos – that’s usually a harbinger of a strong release and an artist who aims to provide content that pins itself to listeners’ playlists for a while to come.
