I should’ve listened closer when Common dubbed his next album Nobody Smiling and said he was back in the lab with No I.D. If not then, “War” should’ve been some sort of indication of how gritty his sound was going to be. Back on his Chicago sh*t might be the best way to frame it.
But now, with “Made Black In America,” featuring Ab-Soul and production by No, Lonnie Lynn’s got my undivided attention. Hol-llly sh*t these dudes both spazz. Com even gets a little righteous in verse two showing that he hasn’t forgotten his lessons.
Nobody Smiling is coming and Common’s making sure we’re paying attention. He’s not dropping hints anymore; he’s planting land mines.
