The Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably one of the most dominating forces in Hollywood. Crashing onto the big screen with Iron Man in 2008 and following it up with films starring some of Marvel Comics biggest superheroes like Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk, things accumulated in 2012’s megahit The Avengers. Since then they’ve played it relatively safe with a third installment in the Robert Downey Jr. led Iron Man franchise and a sequel to Thor. And while these films have been interesting, they’ve mostly played it safe, showcasing relatively well known heroes and villains. All of that changes when the Guardians of the Galaxy soar into theaters.
Set in space, the film centers on a team of outcasts and misfits, who team together keep a mysterious orb out the reaches of the Collector (SPOILER WARNING: the character Benecio del Toro played in the mid-credits scene after Thor: The Dark World) and his agents, Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan of Doctor Who fame). Of course in the course of this cosmic game of keep of away, our heroes find out that there’s more to this orb than meets the eye and it rumors are true, there will be some connections to the current big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (SPOILER WARNING: just watch the end of The Avengers).
Starring Chris Pratt (Peter Quill aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Vin Diesel (the voice of Groot), Bradley Cooper (the voice of Rocket Raccoon), and Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Guardians of the Galaxy is the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Most of the information on the film has been released in snippets here and there, but tonight the first official trailer has dropped and it’s definitely a different beast than what Marvel has usually put out there. Filled with characters that probably only hardcore fans of Marvel Comics know about, this will be the biggest test of Marvel’s dominance on the big screen. If this James Gunn helmed film can really take off, then that pretty much opens the door for a wave of lesser known heroes to hit the big screen.
So far, this trailer definitely has me pumped and I look forward to catching any new info that drops between now and August 1st when the film hits theaters.
