Much like the Travyon Martin/George Zimmerman trial, a Florida jury nutted up once again. A white guy killed another Black kid. During Black history month. And didn’t get charged with doing so.
To be fair, Michael Dunn isn’t getting off completely free a la ol’ George, but his peers failed to convict on the most serious of charges, first degree murder. Because, you know, shooting into a car full of fleeing teens, killing Jordan Davis, constitutes more as “standing your ground” than murder.
Makes perfect sense. Perfect f’n sense.
Anywho, the tandem of Jon Stewart and Jessica Williams address the topic at hand. On second thought, “addresss” is an understatement. They obliterate the topic. Peep this exchange:
Williams: Number one, kids, stay in school.
Stewart: Well, that’s good advice. That’s good advice for anybody.
Williams: By which I mean, if you’re at school stay in the building. If you’re at home stay at home. Don’t go wandering into the street where you might scare a white person. And, look, whatever you need, order it in. Seemless Web, Amazon Prime, Zappos. Those are your friends now.
Which brings us to lesson two. Don’t hang out with your friends anymore.
Stewart: So, stay inside, don’t, isn’t there safety in numbers, though, to some extent?
Williams: Not for black teenagers. The only thing scarier than one black kid is a whole pack of ’em. Jon, four black guys could be taking a calculus test together and to jumpy white folks it would still look like a scene from “The Wire.”
And, sweet baby Jesus, the “bleach” comment was so on-point and so hilarious, deciding whether to laugh or clap is as excruciating as it is brilliant. So do both.
In all seriousness, the clip is a comical (and accurate) take on a very serious epidemic. R.I.P. Jordan Davis. R.I.P. Trayvon Martin. R.I.P. Jonathan Ferrell. One of these days America’ll get it right and provide your families some form of justice. Don’t hold your breath, though.
As a business…man once said, “It would seem like forever is a mighty long time.”
