Forget A Music Video. There’s A Whole Movie Written For Kanye’s ‘Yeezus’

If you weren’t a fan of Yeezus in its purely musical iteration, perhaps an accompanying film will change your mind?

We know of Kanye’s appreciation for the cult classic American Psycho – evidenced by his promotional adaptation of a particularly memorable (and memeable) scene from the movie.

Well, now it seems like the author of the book behind the film, Bret Easton Ellis, is in talks with Hip-Hop’s Rant King to develop a full-length production which may or may not be based around Kanye’s most polarizing album to date. There are scant other details so far, but let’s just hope whatever comes out of this is better than the aforementioned Scott Disick-starring bad YouTube parody – which was notable mostly for the guerrilla-style promo campaign it was tied to.

Read what Ellis told Vice about the proposed project below, and hear his chat with Kanye on the Bret Easton Ellis film podcast here.

Can you tell me about the Kanye film collaboration?

You know what, I can’t. It’s in Kanye Land, and that’s subject to a whole other time frame. He came and asked me to write the film. I didn’t want to at first. Then I listened to Yeezus. It was early summer last year and I was driving in my car. He’d given me an advance copy, and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this. So fuck it, I said yes. And that’s how it happened. That was seven or eight months ago. We’ll see what happens.

I really like him as a person. I know he comes off in this performance-art way in the press, but if you’re just alone with him in a room talking for three hours, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Reflecting back on some of the other perplexing visuals we’ve seen from Yeezus – not to mention Kanye’s coolly-received Runaway film in 2010 – and it seems more likely that any kind of Yeezus film would be much more of a conversation starter than a consensus builder.

Since we’re here, let’s replay the American Psycho-inspired Yeezus commercial to refresh.
